We are so proud of our families and the work they've done to grow together and support their daughters. Following are a few of the notes we've received from our girls and their parents talking about their positive experience with Sunrise and the fruit of their deep and healing work with us. All of these are excerpts from actual emails and letters, but with identifying information deleted or changed to protect privacy.
Sunrise Girls Say...
As for my social situation; I am hanging out with people that support me, are there for me, and even if they can't understand some things, they don't judge me for my past actions. That is exactly what I needed in my relationships. I really appreciate all that Sunrise has done for me, and all the new things that I will learn and grow develop from my "seeds" from Sunrise. Thank you for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon.

I'm doing fantastic! Freshman year is going great. I love it so far and all my teachers are great... My family is doing really well, they say "hi..." I've made all new GOOD AND HEALTHY friends. You would be proud. I think about Sunrise a lot. Sometimes I see someone doing something and think, "wow, they need to go to sunrise." It's really funny how different life is here now than it was before.

I haven't spoken to you in forever! I'm doing great, I'm really sorry that I haven't e-mailed, I have been so busy with school and work. I was thinking that maybe in the summer I could possibly come speak at Sunrise or something? I still feel like I need to give back to the Sunrise community. I'm quite into community service now, you would be proud... At the VERY least I can say that Sunrise helped me in my communication with other people. I'll be a senior next year, then off to college! I'm doing well in school, and I actually have my own car. I don't want to be corny, but there isn't a single day that goes by that I don't think about my experience at Sunrise at least once. I proudly have my graduation certificate on my wall across from my bed. Again with the corniness, but I say a prayer for the girls at Sunrise everyday, hoping that even if they are set in not changing their ways (who does that remind you of?), that they really reflect on why they want whatever type of lifestyle that has turned them upside down, and that they use the time that they have to reflect and learn about themselves... Oh, one more thing, I haven't gone back into self-harm at all. I'm quite proud of that.

Balance - Before I came to Sunrise my life was chaos. Now I have a second chance at life. Now that I am going home, I can say that my life is for the most part balanced.

Things here are good. I finished my first semester in college today. I received a 91% in Math! I'm going to have to tell Joel that too, because I hate math. So anyways, I've been clean for one year, five months, and five days. I just thought you should know. Everything has been much better, thanks to Sunrise. Okay would you ever guess I would say that?! Yes, Sunrise and me. Everything worked out just the way it should be and I'm healthy again. I work and go to school and might even seek out another job.

Sunrise Parents Say...
We are very excited and looking forward to the future. You and your excellent staff have done great work guiding us and Beth through this time. Words are not enough...

We don't know where we'd be (or where Anne would be) without all of you!!!

Mindy is doing really well! She just started back to school again and did well after her return. Please give our best to all there. Thank you again for your hard work and support it helped our extended family work as a team to benefit Mindy and get her to a much healthier place in her life. PS: Her room still looks messy but at the end of the day who cares when she's happy and healthy (shutting the door works for me)!

I just wanted to take a moment to email you and let you know how much we have appreciated working with everyone at Sunrise. It was not an easy decision to send Julie to an RTC, but I am so thankful that I stumbled upon Sunrise and that Sandra was able to participate in treatment with such wonderful, caring people. I am excited about the tools we have all gained and the prospect of a happy future for my family. I truly, truly appreciate the contribution that everyone there at Sunrise has made.

So far Marney is doing great and I am thrilled to have my daughter back physically and emotionally thank you. Best wishes to all

I think about you often and wanted you to know again how much you have helped Leslie and our family. I am hoping that once we get settled in {our new home} that Leslie and I can make a trip to Utah so that she can visit with friends at Sunrise.
– Mom, NV
I personally want to thank you for all the help you gave us with Laney. She is a changed daughter, for the better. We get along great. She has a good relationship with her sister and her mother. You were a desperate choice for us at a time when we did not know where to turn. I thank God for giving me back my daughter and directing us to you.

Many of you know that Amy wouldn't have even been able to fathom college or any future for that matter if it wasn't for her treatment at Sunrise. Sunrise was such a blessing and now she has the opportunity to take all of the healing, coping skills and strengths she has gained to pursue her future.

Today was a most moving ceremony, not only for Jessie but the staff and us parents. It is such a poignant way of showing us the path that we were one before and the new path we are on now! I thank you for letting us be a part of that special time.

Graduation was wonderful. To hear the students and staff alike let Jen know how much she has grown during this whole process I think has shown her that all her hard work has been noticed by others and that she can do things on her own. I really can't put into words how much you all have done for us in the last 10 months. I am just so glad that we had that support, help and encouragement from all of you.
– Mom, WA
Thank you so much for your mentoring of Suzy. Both her father and I saw significant change since the last visit and are grateful for all the work you and the Sunrise staff have been doing. She looks up to and trusts you and you have always been there for her and I think that consistency has contributed a lot to her development. I do know that at the beginning she was probably very unkind and oppositional towards you as she didn't want to cooperate with anyone, especially people in authority, so all of this is wonderful improvement.

Patricia has really learned a lot about good people, hard work and self discipline through all of this. She appears to be developing more self-confidence, thinking more and learning to engage with and respect people she might have flippantly and summarily dismissed in the past. It hasn't been easy for her and I know she will continue to struggle but with the support she is receiving from all of you, she is making tremendous strides. I'm also excited that she's beginning to be more honest and open, less impulsive and manipulative and take responsibility for herself, her education and future.
– Dad, IL
Thanks for everything you did for Bobbi at Sunrise. I truly believe that she would not be where she is today without all the tools you gave her!

Parenting and PTSD
Working through the parents’ PTSD symptoms can, in turn, help them cope with their daughter’s trauma. Once they understand that their daughter will be okay, the denial often breaks and real progress in family system can occur.
COMMON SENSE WELLNESS: LIVEABLE LIVING ROOMS
Families that spend quality time together tend to have at least one thing in common—a good place to hang out. If you’ve ever tried to have a relaxed conversation in an uncomfortable physical setting, you know that it’s almost impossible. Setting up an inviting common space in your home that encourages a combination of quiet activity and conversation can help foster communication and connection.
COMMON SENSE WELLNESS: MEALS TOGETHER
In today’s over-programmed culture, the idea of eating together as a family may seem quaint if not absurd. But the benefits of breaking bread regularly with others—especially family—are not only intuitively obvious, they’re also being confirmed by research. Healthier eating habits, social skills, family connection and communication, and even weight control are all positive outcomes that can be influenced by family meals.
